PCS to Colorado Springs? Here’s What Every Military Family Should Know Before Moving

Relocating to Colorado Springs on military orders can feel overwhelming, but it’s also one of the most rewarding moves you’ll make. Home to Peterson Space Force Base, Schriever Space Force Base, and Fort Carson, Colorado Springs offers a strong military community, beautiful scenery, and neighborhoods for every lifestyle and budget.

Commute Times and Base Proximity

Commute times depend on your duty station. For those at Peterson SFB or Schriever SFB, the east side of town is ideal. Neighborhoods such as Stetson Hills, Banning Lewis Ranch, and Meridian Ranch are 15–30 minutes from base. If you’re stationed at Fort Carson, areas like Fountain, Security-Widefield, and Broadmoor Bluffs provide shorter commutes and family-friendly amenities. Major highways make travel around town convenient, though base shift changes can create brief traffic delays.

School Districts for Military Families

Strong schools are a key factor for many families. Academy District 20 in the north and Falcon District 49 in the east are both known for academic excellence and community involvement. Fountain-Fort Carson District 8 serves the Fort Carson area and offers great support for military-connected students. Families can also explore charter and magnet programs throughout the city for additional flexibility.

Choosing the Right Neighborhood

Colorado Springs offers diverse options, from new master-planned communities to established, tree-lined areas. For modern homes and amenities, consider Wolf Ranch, Cordera, or Banning Lewis Ranch. For charm and proximity to downtown, Old North End and Broadmoor are popular. Outdoor recreation is always nearby, with access to trails, parks, and mountain views across the city.

Support for Military Relocations

Colorado Springs is one of the most military-friendly cities in the country. Local programs, VA-approved lenders, and relocation services help make each PCS transition smooth.
